The term “toxic masculinity” becomes ever fashionable these days. What makes someone a good husband and father? Providing enough money and security? Or is his presence more important? Brothers Isra and Cheito are struggling with this question.
In “Entre Dos Aguas” Isra and Cheíto are two Roma brothers: Isra was sent to prison for drug dealing and Cheíto signed up for the Marines. When Isra is released from prison and Cheíto returns from a long mission, they both return to San Fernando.
To capture the passage of time, director Isaki Lacuesta returned to the rusty southern Spanish port of San Fernando (Cadiz), where 12 years ago he followed the kids Isra and Cheito in La leyenda del tiempo (2005). Once again Isaki Lacuesta won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian Film Festival 2018 - the only Spanish filmmaker who has achieved it- with this film that blurries the limits between fiction and documentary.
That Isaki Lacuesta is probably Spain’s most underrated film director is again confirmed by Between Two Waters, his striking, potently human follow-up to 2006’s The Legend of Time.
