Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail 2021 / Royal National Mod 2021

  • Talks / Special Events

The Royal National Mòd (Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail) is Scotland’s premier celebration of the Gaelic language, music, and culture. The Mòd celebrates the unique language, culture, and spirit of the Gaels, promoting its relevance and value in modern Scotland.

Regularly attracting international interest and online audiences, and with competitors participating from all over the world, the Royal National Mòd returns to Inverness this year and will take place between 8-16 October.

The first Mòd was held in Oban in 1892 following the founding of An Comunn Gàidhealach the previous year, and the festival is now held in a different region each year distributing its substantial economic benefits throughout the country.

The Royal National Mòd is a major social event, and feature of the annual cultural calendar of Scotland, providing opportunities for people of all ages to perform across a range of competitive disciplines and art-forms. This Gaelic language, music, and culture celebration includes Gaelic instrumental music, song, Highland dancing, drama, sport, poetry, and literature, raising the profile of the language and promoting confidence in it.

The Mòd is a showcase and focal point for all Gaelic users and supporters, and it is particularly relevant to new generations of confident young Gaels emerging from schools and universities, and who are the lifeblood and future of the Gaelic language.

In addition to the official Mòd competitions and events, a packed programme of diverse fringe events typically runs in tandem with the Mòd. The fringe is an imaginative, inspiring, and innovative event, which aims to be both aspirational and inspirational, pairing emerging talents with established acts.
