Convention Culture was created by Callum McArthur, an alumnus of Cashback for Communities who attended our filmmaking classes. We're excited to be screening Callum's film at the 18th Inverness Film Festival this Sun 8 Nov.
We asked the aspiring director to tell us more about his short documentary:
I made this documentary because I have been a massive fan of conventions since I was 13 years old. I wanted to chat to as many people as I could to get their own perspectives on conventions, to try and track down the main reason why people attend. I was so pleased to see that so many were happy to take part, from the UK to the USA and Australia.
It was good to get so many views of conventions, I wanted to cover different perspectives and not just from the fans who attend. I was lucky enough to have so many helpful people around me, they were so kind to give me their convention footage that they had filmed at previous events. I wouldn’t have been able to do the film without them.
It was so exciting to also get Sophie Aldred (Dr Who) to do the voiceover for the documentary, I'm a massive fan of her work.
I decided to submit it into the Inverness Film Festival and was so pleased to hear that it was chosen to be screened in the cinema! I’m so excited for audiences to see the documentary and hopefully, through the enthusiasm of the people I interviewed, it might inspire them to look into conventions.
