We are pleased to announce the reopening of our cinemas and café bar on Wednesday 26thMay 2021.
Eden Court first closed in March 2020 due to the COVID pandemic and for the second time in December 2020. With the Scottish Government now expecting all of Scotland to move into level 2 on May 17, we announce today that we will open our cinemas and café bar on Wednesday 26thMay.
Planning towards this date has given us the time needed to ensure the safety of our building, bring staff back from furlough and put together an outstanding programme of films for our loyal audiences. Preparations are also underway for Under Canvas, our flagship summer festival. With all the necessary COVID safety measures in place we are very excited to welcome you back to Eden Court.
Frances McDormand in Nomadland
After closing last year’s Inverness Film Festival, Nomadland comes back to the big screen following a film awards season blitz that culminated in a triumphant sweep at the Academy Awards last month. We are thrilled to present two other exceptional Oscar winners; Sound of Metal and Minari.
Indie cinema essentials include Christian Petzold’s German drama Undine, exploring the myth of the water nymph, and Billie Piper’s directorial debut; pitch-black comedy Rare Beasts. We know how much families will have been missing the big screen experience so we decided to bring Technicolor extravaganza Wonder Woman 1984 back, alongside new Disney instant classic Raya and the Last Dragon and mischievous romp Peter Rabbit 2. With more titles yet to be confirmed, our new programme will, as always, aim to offer something for everyone.
Under Canvas 2019
Under Canvas, our outdoor summer festival co-curated with Fèis Rois, returns from 1 July – 30 September 2021. Presenting three months of live music, performance and DJ sets on our lawn by the banks of the River Ness, Under Canvas promises to be a joyful, family-friendly return to socialising and shared enthusiasm for the arts. We are very excited to share the full programme with you in early June.
In July, we also restart live performance on our main stage in the Empire Theatre, as we welcome the return of in-person events with the Donmar Warehouse’s thrilling socially-distanced Blindess (5th – 10th July 2021). Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens has adapted Nobel Prize-winner José Saramago’s dystopian novel as a sound installation, with immersive binaural sound design and voiced by Juliet Stevenson. Tickets are on sale now.

James Mackenzie-Blackman, Chief Executive, Eden Court, said:
“We are thrilled to announce our reopening plans. All of us at Eden Court know the vital role we play in the heart of the city. A safe welcome is guaranteed as we embark on rebuilding Eden Court, a process and journey that will take some time. We have curated a programme of events this summer that I sincerely hope will allow audiences and visitors to be reminded of the impact of the arts, and the impact that socialising has on our day-to-day wellbeing. We’re in the business of bringing people together and we can’t wait to start doing that again”.
Paul MacDonald-Taylor, Head of Film + Visual Art, Eden Court, said:
“Film has always been at its best as a communal experience. People can come together and be transported to anywhere on Earth, or anywhere in your imagination, using the window of the cinema screen. It feels great to be able to open our cinemas again and to reopen that window to our audiences”.
