Huda Donald, originally from Iraq and now based in Invernesss, gives her perspective on Limbo and talks about her own experiences.
What made Limbo tick for me is it is one of the very few films available that deal with the psychological sense of “stagnation” - that seemingly endless waiting that many asylum seekers are forced to go through.
The accuracy in the depictions of pain and the psychological trauma that the main character Omar, played by Actor Amir El-Masry, went through are central to its success as a complex, thought-provoking (sometimes shocking) reality-based film. The use of humour to break up many of the harrowing details was excellent.
I know this reality as I was an asylum-seeker. I arrived at Edinburgh as a 20-year-old Iraqi girl escaping the brutal regime of Saddam Hussain. Although there were interpreters, I did not fully understand what the term asylum-seeker meant. When I asked my brother, who was already living in Edinburgh, he said it meant that I could not return to my homeland until there was regime change in Iraq.
I remember the looks of disappointment and rejection I experienced from some, but I also remember the great kindness of so many others.
Limbo brought back a flood of difficult memories of what it is like to be a stranger in a foreign land, what it was to feel like an outcast, how to learn a language from the start, which is not as difficult as learning the culture from the start, and the sense of inadequacy and confusion with the simplest things, such as where to cross the street and how to use a vending machine.
It also brought with it memories and also still a reality for me, and I guess for many refugees/asylum-seekers and immigrants, a range of emotions, a sense of loss for your homeland and the culture you grew up in. There is a deep longing for the simplest things about your culture and homeland such as a bag of Sumac, a certain flavour or smell or a musical tune or a song, to deep yearning for your family’s faces and voices.
Once someone from my family who also experienced what is like to be a refugee told me that ‘when you are forced to leave your country because of war and are forced to live somewhere else in a foreign land you will miss everything, you will miss even the lamppost in your home street!’
I was aware during the film that it was aimed at the Scottish audience to show them the extent of the psychological and physical suffering of an asylum-seeker who is stuck in the Limbo of the asylum system, and it succeeded in doing that so beautifully.
There was also the feeling in the film of becoming accepted, you will find some light at the end of the tunnel but not quite, as you still want to go back to see your country. But it seems easier to be anywhere else in the world. And the longing and the yearning, the sense of displacement and pain that may always remain, was also very well acted.
